Goalie Feature: Matthew Savage, Eastern Shore Mariners
Matthew "Matty" Savage was born in 2002 and is a first year atom backstopping the Eastern Shore Mariners at the Atom A level. Matty worked in tandem with Colin to help his team bring home the gold at Truro Bearcat Tournament this past Christmas.
He is a fan of the up and coming workhorse from Detroit, Jimmy Howard. When he is not cheering on Detroit in the West, he is pulling for the Penguins in the East.
His pregame routine usually includes an NHL player staple, spaghetti dinner to carb up for his big games. Matty likes to collect shutouts and he is planning to work hard over the summer so he can bag some more next season.
I have had the chance to work with Matty for three years now and I must say that my impression of him has grown positively as a Jimmy Howard like plugger. He works on his game with diligence and without complaint, preferring to have a lot of substance with a terrific butterfly slide that slams the doors on shooters that drop their heads to soon. The key to his current and future success will lie in his work ethic. He'll keep slaving at a drill without giving up until I give him a long-overdue break. Looking forward to working with Matt again soon!!
