UE Coaching Resources: Goalie Evaluation Plan and Drills
Just to let everyone know that I have uploaded my goalie evaluation plans and drill that I used for the 2011 season for a couple of local associations. I think these plans offer a well rounded cross-section of drills that should help young goalies demonstrate to the association evaluators their basic and advanced goaltending skill.
The drill plan is broken down into two general age-based categories. The first set of plans is for the Atom and Pee Wee-aged goaltenders. The second set of drills is for Bantam and Midget-aged goaltenders. The first set of drill focus more on basic movement and save techniques with only a minimum of game-like drills. The drill set for older goalies is designed to allow the goaltenders to show advanced skills to help the evaluators discover which goaltenders are becoming competent in high-level game situations.
In the package of downloads, there is my evaluation sheet template. I have not been a big fan of using a 1 to 5 point or 1 to 10 point system for evaluating goaltender skills. The issue that I have with this type of system is that the coaches' will forget what would denote a 3 or 4 in a skill between different goalies. In lieu of that 5 point system, I prefer to use a relative ranking system where the group of goalies can be ranked in order for different skills. For example, in the evaluation of rebound control in a group of seven goalies, the coaches can each rank the goaltenders from the best (ranked #1) to the least skilled (#7) in the evaluation category.
