Viktor Fasth mixes it up with a little old school technique
It is great to see new and young goalies coming into the NHL that can utilize what many would call a throwback technique. A stick side sweepcheck from a player cutting across doesn't seem to happen very often any more but when it does, it can look spectacular. The sudden aggressive play should be something in every goalie's golf bag of tricks, but not one that you want to utilize too often. The element of surprise with perfect execution is what is essential to pull off a sweepcheck like this.
The announcers do hint that this move was possible because Marleau was alone, but I definitely think that he had reasonable back-checking pressure forcing him in a lane close to Fasth. Fasth uses Marleau's head drop to watch the puck as his signal to commit to the check.
Great stuff!!
